apfa Presents Inaugural Print Finishing Awards

Two leading print finishing apprentices at Melbourne’s RMIT have become the first recipients of a new award, sponsored by the Australian Print Finishers Association (apfa), which were presented this week at the RMIT Media Industry Training Awards 2010/2011.

The apfa Awards for Apprentice of the Year in Print Finishing Level 3, including a $500 cheque for each apprentice, were presented by apfa President Peter Johnston to Daniel Menkens from Signs Publishing Company (2010) and Marilyn May from Gippsland Trade Printers (2011).

Daniel commenced at RMIT’s International Centre of Graphic Technology (ICGT) in 2008 and according to RMIT’s Phillip Barnes, has been an outstanding Print finishing Apprentice ‘from day one’.
“Daniel is an extremely unassuming person who is exceptionally knowledgeable about his profession and has an obvious hunger for learning which complements his ability,” said Barnes. Daniel also took out the $15,000 Collie Print Trust Apprentice of the Year Award in this year’s Awards, the first Print Finisher for more than 10 years to do so.

Like many women who enter trades, Marilyn May took some time to gain confidence in her chosen trade but soon became a natural leader of her class, working extremely hard to learn as much as she could.
“If Marilyn started her apprenticeship thinking everyone would know more than her, she not only caught up, but quickly passed many of her peers through her determination and hard work and became the ‘go to’ apprentice within her class,” said Barnes.

“There is perhaps no more important issue for our industry than fostering the talent of a new generation of print finishers,” said Johnston after the ceremony.
“apfa is delighted to be part of these important awards, which encourage excellence and recognise the achievements of apprentices and, it should be said, businesses like Signs Publishing Company and Gippsland Trade Printers who are prepared to support young people and the future of our industry by taking on apprentices.
“We are particularly pleased to be able to offer special encouragement to these outstanding print finishing apprentices with the inaugural apfa Awards. We warmly congratulate Daniel and Marilyn on their achievement and look forward to following their careers in future years.”

Other apfa news on the night came in the form of appreciation awards to Tegan Henderson who co-designed and maintains the apfa website, and her lecturer, Murray Chapman for his work on the site. Tegan also took out the $15,000 Collie Trust Graduate of the Year Award. Phillip Barnes, long-time RMIT teacher and member of the apfa committee, was also deservedly recognised for his work at RMIT with the Collie Trust Staff Scholarship.
