Blister Pack Heat Sealing
A water based liquid coating which is applied to clay coated board. The coating is later activated with a combined process of heat and pressure to allow a particular product to be sealed into position on the board.
Examples: Battery packs, small garden tools and most products that are displayed on hangers at hardware and sporting stores.

Specialised design services for creating the structural designs (not graphics) for packaging, using CAD. These may include scanning and digitising.

Film Output
The process of outputting a design onto film.

Hand Assembly / Hand Work
Peforming a process that cannot be done mechanically and can only be done by people.
Examples: Products that fall outside machine specifications such as assembly and packaging of difficult products of odd shapes and sizes.

Metal Eyeletting
The process of adding metal eyelets to finished pieces to enhance the overall appearance of the product, and also substantially reinforce strength and structural integrity.
Examples: Swing tickets, collated swatches, danger tags, presentation swatches, calculator wheels

- If pre drilling stock check size of hole required
- Circles should have punch included in cutting forme
- Thick swatches may require Chicago Screws

Mounting
The adhering of two stocks together, a base stock and top stock, to produce a finished product.
Examples: Posters, show cards, point of sale displays, stands
Tips:
- Base stock must be a minimum of 150gsm
- Can use a thinner top stock, or two heavy stocks together.

Numbering
The process of utilising a mechanical numbering box fitted to either a printing press or a cylinder. This method is good for paper or board. Alternatively digital numbering using an inkjet head is good for all types of stock.
Examples: Pre printed quote and invoice books, admittance tickets

- Allow adequate space for the number to be inserted
- Check with your supplier whether a prefix is required

Pharmaceutical Folding
The process of folding very small leaflets.

Round Cornering
The process of cutting a circumference to a corner of a product to produce a round corner.
Examples: Bank books, diaries, business cards, swing tickets

- Thick coaster board may crack or not cut cleanly on cutting edge.

Routing Services
The cutting of flat sheets on an automated router.
Examples: Cutting formes, male and female strippers, counters, signage, and wood, plastic and light metal fabrication

Shrink Wrapping
The process of encapsulating a product or products with a special film that is then shrunk around the product using heat which establishes a high gloss protective finish around the product giving it a clean, fresh and finished look.
Examples: Software, CD’s, DVD’s, Multi-pack greeting cards/invitations, Twin Packs, Promotional items, Cosmetic boxes, OTC Medicine (aspirin), Packaging supplies,
Tips:
- Use 100 gauge film (1 mil) for heavy products.
- Use 125 gauge (1.25 mil) for applications requiring maximumstrength.
- Use “Soft shrink” film of 40-55 gauge for thin or flimsy product.

Skin Pack Adcote
Skin Pack is applied in the same manner as blister pack but is a solvent based product, the main difference being the method of sealing the product. Blister pack is sealed onto the board but skin pack uses suction and heat to mould the plastic around the shape of the item being sealed.
Examples: Generally solid items such as spanners or other small tools.
Tips:
- Not recommended for crushable or fragile products.

String & Button and Twin Tongue Fasteners
The process of applying a string and button or twin tongue fasteners to a finished product to enable re-opening several times.
Examples: Envelopes, folders, internal mail envelopes

- Check for maximum depth of buttons according to product size and shape.
- String and buttons are usually applied to a finished product

Stringing/Tagging
The process of applying a string to a finished product.

Tabbing
The process of cutting either a island or continuous tab to a board stock.

Three Knife Trimming
This is the process of trimming head, foot and foredge of all bookwork.
Examples: All bookwork

- Always allow a minimum of 5mm trim on all edges.

Laser Cutting
Laser cutting is a unique process that allows very intricate cut-outs to be made in paper and board. Software controls the cutting process and allows for sequential images to be processed. The laser can also be programmed to cut part way through the sheet to achieve simple creasing.
No expensive tooling or preparation is required because all work is created using computer files on disk.
Examples: Invitations, covers, etc.
Tips:
- Test the stock before specifying because some stocks will scorch or flare.
- For example, some coated and laminated stocks tend to flare.
- Most laser cutting requires “bridging”. It is recommended that bridges are a minimum width of 1mm.

Process Requirements & Guidelines:
Please follow the following steps when planning for lasercutting:
- Art is best in a vector file with type converted to curves or lines.
- When drawing are include “bridges” to avoid complete cutout of images. This can be done by your supplier if required.
- Check regarding stock to be cut to avoid flaring or scorching.
- If cutting to register with another image (e.g. print) then ensure that the correct grip and lay edges are used.
- Keep image to be cut as close as possible to grip and lay edges.
- Check with your supplier for other technical details.
