Double Sided Taping

To facilitate adhesion through application of a peel & seal double sided tape to paper and board products.

Examples: Envelopes, shelf wobblers, posters, etc.

Tips:

• Not as strong as gluing processes

Gluing

The process of applying glue, or other adhesive to packaging usually by folding and sealing with either cold or hot glue.

Examples: Cartons, presentation folders, envelopes, ticket wallets, food packaging, covers with pockets, CD wallets.

• Limited to cardboard / or heavy paper products

Please follow the following steps when planning for gluing:

There should be absolutely no miss-representation on the issue of whether glue will stick to varnished and coated areas. Sometimes over coated areas operators can achieve a small non-permanent tack but CANNOT guarantee permanent adhesion.

GLUE FLAPS and GLUE AREAS MUST BE KEPT FREE OF INK AND COATINGS

The following has been tested by Australian gluing companies and has successful adhesion:
-COLD PVA GLUE to UNCOATED paper or board.
-MATT LAMINATE (1 side only) to UNCOATED paper or board as long as the glue area is minimum 20mm.
-POLY ETHELENE (1 side only) to UNCOATED paper or board as long as the glue area is minimum 20mm.

There are a number of glues used, which will give a varying result of adhesion depending on the substrates being glued. There is of course none better than Cold glue direct to board without the barrier of film, ink or varnish.

Pattern Gluing

Placement of different types of adhesives in a pre determined pattern onto a product.

Examples: Direct mail, peel and reveal contest forms

Window Facing

The application of a transparent film (usually PVC or acetate)

Examples: Envelopes, cartons, Chocolate boxes, folders

Tips:

• Material less than 200 gsm will not run well.
• Check the minimum glue area required around the window.

Please follow the following steps when planning for window facing:

The Window facing we are referring to is specifically related the packagingindustry. This style of windowing is more suited for carton material andenvelopes 200gsm and above (NOT paper envelopes).Materials recommended and generally available for window facing are as follows;
-PVC in .050, .075 and .100 microns thick.
-BOPP Poly propylene in .035 and .050 microns thick
-Acetate in .035, .050, .075, .100, .120 microns thick.

Designing a carton with the window around a corner is not recommended.A minimum window border of 15mm is required to allow for gluing the film to the inside of the product. When ordering and planning a job for window facing a supplier would require a CAD drawing, file or sample, in order to have film slit to accurate size, in advance of the production date. As Gluing and Window facing are specialised services it is highly recommended that the planner and/or buyer should communicate verbally to the service supplier for company specific requirements.
